You Tube2/22/08
To me, You Tube was for people who had a plethora of free time on their hands who did not seem to mind making fools of themselves for a worldwide audience. With this stereotypical perspective in mind, I chose to avoid You Tube altogether. What I recently discovered, however, is that You Tube can be quite a valuable educational tool. A quick keyword search can result in numerous pertinent video clips, and if you have a few minutes to sift through the vast array of video postings, you might find an appropriate clip to post on your PNN teacher page or use as a classroom media literacy tool.
Currently, more and more students are posting their projects on You Tube, while other users are using You Tube to share pertinent interviews, film trailers, and individual perspectives on various educational topics. I support novice teachers in their curriculum planning and implementation, and while looking for some possible resources this past week, I came across the video clips posted here. One is a student work example posted on You Tube for a class project on Elie Weisel's Night, as well as a video interview clip posted by the Nobel Prize You Tube channel with Elie Weisel.
Of course, as with anything, there are various disadvantages and criticisms of this mass media streaming. The You Tube reality has caused debate over copyright infringement, particularly within the arena of the music industry, as people posting video and multimedia content to You Tube often use copyrighted material. Another possible limitation for teachers is lack of web access - though more schools are going to a "live" classroom format, the reality is that many more simply do not as of yet have the financial resources to provide all teachers and students with computers for daily classroom use.
